Chronicle 04: The Oni – The Guardian of Shadows
Transform your demons into armor.
Intention: Channel to sublimate
The idea behind this mask was not just to sculpt a menacing figure from Japanese folklore, but to explore a more personal process. We all carry within us inner anger, fears or "demons". I wanted to use the art of modeling to channel these energies, contain them and transform them into something beautiful and controlled.
By freezing these tormented features in the resin, we give physical form to what is immaterial. We no longer suffer its shadow, we look it in the face, we tame it, and we transform it into an emblem of strength.
Symbolism: An emblem of protection
Beyond psychology, this mask is part of the tradition of protection ceremonies found throughout the world. The Oni, here, is not the enemy. He becomes the guardian.
It is a spiritual shield intended to ward off evil spirits and negative influences. Placed on a wall or carried, it acts like a totem: a fierce presence that watches over its environment.
The Work of Colors: Three visions, three energies
I worked on three finishing variations to explore different depths of the object:
Visceral Red is the color of raw vitality. This intense red represents the inner fire that we seek to control. It is an organic piece that imposes a strong and protective presence.
The "Relique" Patina (Vert-de-gris), On this version, I work on erosion. The oxidized bronze appearance gives the mask a historical dimension, as if it were an ancient treasure that has spanned the ages to protect us today.
The Dark Contrast (Black and Bronze), Here, I test the depth of a matte black compared to the shine of a recent and brilliant copper. This contrast highlights the aggressive lines of the horns and the purity of the moon, creating a perfect balance between shadow and metallic light.
The Finish: The balance between raw and precious
Each Oni is finalized with braided ropes and minute details on the teeth and look. It is this mixture of textures between resin worked like metal and natural materials that makes each mask a unique piece.
